Hornbill Camp

Hornbill camp at Thattekkad near Kochi, is so located, to perfectly blend into the forest, so you can enjoy your own private jungle and the spectacular view of the river Periyar. Along its banks, birds flock in their thousands and the cool ambience is the ultimate prize for the birder. Known as the Birder's Paradise, the camp and the adjoining Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is home to over 270 species of birds, including all the endemics. Mottled Wood Owl Spot-bellied Eagle Owl Malayan Night Heron, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Rusty-tailed Flycatcher, Grey-headed Bulbul, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon are some of the rarer species found here.

Besides, the camp has a lot to offer those with a taste for adventure. The Periyar is ideal for river kayaking. Trekkers are rewarded with sightings of Elephants during their unique exposure to this lowland rain forest. Staying at the camp one can indulge in a biking adventure through the spice plantations, forest tracts and quaint villages around the camp.

The Hornbill Camp is located close to the Asia’s second largest bird sanctuary called Salim Ali’s Bird sanctuary

Thattekkad (Salim Ali's) Bird sanctuary

Thattekkad (Salim Ali's) Bird sanctuary (7 km from Hornbill Camp) is the home for 270 species of birds including the migratory ones. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 25 square kilometers and is located between the tributaries of the Periyar River.

The fascinating birds that are found here are Blue Bearded Bee-eater, Malabar Trogon, Grey Jungle Fowl, Black Winged Kite, Brown Shrike, Crimson-fronted Barbet, Ceylon Frogmouth, Small Sunbird, Night Heron, Blue winged parakeet, White-bellied Tree pie, Indian Roller, Malabar Grey Hornbill, etc. The thick tropical deciduous and evergreen cover is a safe haven for these winged creatures

Accommodation

At Hornbill Camp, we provide an unusual stay, which is in tent houses. We have total 20 deluxe tents (Double fly living tent), 17 of which are water front.
Accommodation here is simple and harmless to the nature. Here we are redefining luxury. Each tent house has its own private bathroom and an exclusive balcony. You can simply laze on the cane chairs in the balcony in front of the tent and enjoy the true colors of nature along with the humming of a 1000 birds.

Among the specialties of this camp are the comfortable beds, en-suite attached European style closet, shower and hot running water. We also provide limited power supply available for lights and fans as well as charging facilities for laptops and mobiles (the camp is on the fringe areas with limited mobile reception)

Our Gazebo is a huge water front restaurant and relaxing place. It would indeed be the ultimate experience to watch the rain forest from the gazebo on the banks of the gently flowing river Periyar and loosen up in the calm atmosphere provided by the evergreen forest.

Bird watching

Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is one of the richest bird habitats in peninsular India, comparable only with the Eastern Himalayas.Our naturalist will be happy to guide you through the forest and will help you with sighting and identifying the rare species of Thattekkad sanctuary. For all visitors to our camp, we arrange kayaking expedition's trips to discover the majesty of the thick forests across the river, short walks in the plantations that surround the camp and village visits for those interested in the culture and lifestyles of the region

Kayaking (in Periyar River)

The Hornbill Camp is located on the banks of the river Periyar. On the opposite bank of the river are some of the finest lowland forests of Kerala. A kayaking trip amidst these great swathes of forests is an ideal sport for those inclined to be adventurous and explore the bio-diversity within these forests. You can also kayak to some of the villages upstream to get a first hand glimpse of life in a typical spice growing and agrarian village of Kerala.

Cycling through the villages

The location of Hornbill Camp is ideally suited for cycling journeys to the countryside - spice growing villages, gentle mountain slopes, farms, forests at Thattekkad, the magnificent Bhoothathankettu barrage and the ever inviting local population. You can go on a full day expedition or wander around at leisure through the friendly countryside!

Elephant training camp visit

Kodanad lies on the southern bank of Periyar to the east of Perumbavoor town – 30 minutes drive away from Hornbill Camp – once the largest elephant-capturing centre of South India. The elephant kraal and training centre with its rescued elephants is a big draw for those interested in close encounters of the elephant kind. The session's highlight is undoubtedly bathing the baby elephants in the river Periyar.

Village walks and plantation visit

The quiet and beautiful countryside is ideal for walkers to discover Kerala through it's off-the-beaten- track trails and the interior villages. The lush countryside and the friendly villagers are bound to make your walk rewarding. On the walks you can walk into a rubber estate, a spice plantation and numerous farms where our guide will be happy to explain the intricacies of farm life.

Local Culture

Hornbill Camp is located at a culturally rich location. Temple festivals, local arts & festivals thrive here. You could become a part of the local celebration of culture while staying at the camp. A visit to the 'sacred grove' near Perumbavur is bound to impress with its message of environmental conservation & the local beliefs.

White Water Rafting

From Bhoothatahnkettu near Hornbill Camp, the river Periyar is great for a day out rafting. The gradient from here for the next 14 kms makes it ideal for white water rafting with numerous rapids and pools. The dense forest on the sides of the river as one rafts along, is indeed a sight which will make this expedition richer & more varied from the other white water rafting locations in the country. (Minimum 12 persons are required for a run)

Cuisine

The food is ethnic Kerala, prepared with home-grown spices. We Serve only Buffet. Both Veg and Non- Veg is served here.

Seasons

Thattekkad experiences a tropical climate. The annual rainfall recorded here is round 3000mm. The weather remains pleasant throughout the year while monsoon hits this place in the months between May and July. Temperature varies from 23- 370 C

The best drive is from OCT – MAR. This is the migratory period of Birds. JUN - JUL is the rainy season.

Getting there

  • Cochin is the nearest airport, which is 50kms from the camp. (Airport- Kalady- Perumbavur- Kothamangalam-Thattekkad( Palamattam))
  • The nearest railway station is Aluva, at a distance of 48 km. (Aluva- Prumbavur- Kothamangalam- Thattekkad( Palamattam))
  • Kochi is 70 Km from the camp(Kochi- Thripunithara- Muvattupuzha- Kothamangalam- Thattekkad- (Palamattam)) (Kochi- Aluva- Perumbavur- Kothamangalam- Thattekkad( Palamattam) )

After breakfast drive to Hornbill camp Thattekkad for an activity filled day excursion.

With its enviably preserved surroundings, is the ideal place for adventure lovers and general nature lovers, who are looking for a comfortable place, and several activity options that have to do with the natural wonders of Kerala

On arrival, to the huge waterfront open restaurant called gazebo and enjoy your welcome drink. Listen to the songs of a thousand birds and watch the true colors of nature. It would indeed be the ultimate experience to watch the rain forest from the gazebo on the banks of the gently flowing river Periyar and loosen up in the calm atmosphere provided by the evergreen forest

Now it's time for some activates. You are free to do activities at any time you want. However it is recommended to do the activities in small groups.

The lunch will be served at the restaurant. The food is ethnic Kerala, prepared with home-grown spices. Both Veg and Non- Veg are served here.

After an early tea and snacks proceed to the Bhoothathan kettu dam. Enjoy a spectacular view of the dam and take pleasure in the low land trekking to the old bhothathan kettu dam with our guide. He'll explain you the myth related to the dam and will guide you to the place where you could get a feel of the nature at his best.
Reach back Kochi at 6.00 pm
